MIKEY
DEE HONORED BY WMFO
The staff of Tufts University
community radio station WMFO
(Medford, MA) voted to officially change the name of the station's Studio
D to Studio Dee, in honor of the contributions and achievements
of longtime WMFO deejay Mikey
Dee. The vote, taken at the Fall 2000 General Meeting, was unanimous.
Mikey, who has been with station since 1985, suffered a series of brainstem
strokes as a complication of routine surgery in February 2000. His recovery
continues at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston.
The idea for the name change was the brainchild of Drugless
Douglas, fellow WMFO deejay and long-time friend of Dee. "Mikey
has booked hundreds of local bands to play live from the legendary Studio
D for his 'On The Town' show," said Douglas. "Arguably, Mikey
Dee has done far and away more than any other individual to put WMFO
on the map. The concept of 'Studio Dee' seemed to be a simple but perfect
way to honor Mikey for all he's done for the station, the deejays, and
the Boston music scene." The concept has also garnered the universal
endorsement of the local music community.
In addition to his WMFO duties, Mikey Dee is the consummate Boston music
scenester: Director of AAA & Public Radio Promotion at The
Planetary Group, Associate Editor for the local music fanzine The
Noise, and tireless promoter of the Boston music scene. When healthy,
Dee can be found in several clubs several nights per week, checking
out the scene. Mikey was named one of the "Top 10 Players"
in Boston music by The Improper Bostonian, and he won an unprecedented
seventh crown as "Top Deejay" in the 2000 Noise Reader's Poll.
After 2000's overwhelmingly successful effort, another series of concerts
in support of The Mikey Dee Musician's Benefit Trust occurred May 3-5,
2001.
.
Mikey's show, "On
The Town With Mikey Dee" continues to showcase local talent
with a different band performing live from Studio Dee every week. The
show airs 9pm - midnight (ET) every Wednesday. A team of several WMFO
deejays and other hipsters take turn keeping the seat warm until Mikey
returns.
